Special Pieces
Special Pieces is the shelf for players past the basics who want the next layer: fours make line sweepers, fives make colour clearers, Ls make area blasts.

Alphabet Merge ChallengeHow Special Pieces plays in the browser
Every game here shows its specials plainly on the board, lets you review the last move, and never sells power for real money. We drop games with a coin shop, because purchasable strength turns the board from a puzzle into a till. This shelf also suits two people on one screen: one drives the moves, one hunts the pairs to combine.
All 45 games in this section run inside the tab: no install, no account, no download. Tap a title and the game opens on this same page.
- One tab, one game. Close the tab and the session is over.
- Finger controls or keyboard, depending on the title.
- Scores stay in this browser, so there is no account to maintain.

Five things about special tiles
A special tile is strongest when held, not when spent immediately.
- Do not use a row-clearer while loose tiles remain.
- Save an area-clearer for the moment the board locks.
- Combine two special tiles only when the board must open now.
- A special tile does not cascade without a same-colour tile beneath it.
- Count your special tiles before you start, not halfway through.
- Trade a special for a move Only trade below three moves left.
- Trade a special for a move Only trade below three moves left.
- Trade a special for a move Only trade below three moves left.
In Special Pieces, players who save the area-clearer until the board locks usually clear hard boards without losing a turn.
Special tiles, how each one is built, and what it clears
Special tiles in Special Pieces are made by shape, not by luck. Knowing the shape that produces each one turns a random board into a plan.
| Special | Made by | Clears | Best placed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four in a row | Four tiles in a straight line | One full row or column | Beside a stack, not through it |
| Four in a square | Four tiles in a 2 by 2 block | A three by three area | On a cluster of blockers |
| Five in a row | Five tiles in a straight line | Every tile of one colour | Anywhere, but late in the round |
| L shape | Five tiles in an L | A row and a column together | A corner, where both arms do work |
| T shape | Five tiles in a T | Three rows and three columns | The middle of the densest cluster |
| Striped pair | Two special tiles swapped | Three full rows | A board with few gaps left |
| Colour plus stripe | Colour tile swapped with a striped one | Every tile of one colour, each clearing a row | Any board with more than five colours |
| Cross shape | Five tiles in a plus | One row and one column, centred | The junction of two stacks |
| Double colour | Two colour tiles swapped | Every tile of two colours | A board with six colours and no gaps |
Build specials in the lower half. A special made at the top clears rows that were about to refill anyway.
Four steps to chain two special tiles on purpose
Chaining is the highest-scoring action in the game and the most commonly wasted one. The order below keeps both tiles useful.
- Build the weaker tile firstA row-clearer is easy to make and easy to place. Make it first, then build the colour tile around it instead of the other way round.
- Park it on an edgeA special sitting in the middle gets consumed by an accidental cascade. An edge square keeps it until you choose to use it.
- Clear the squares between themTwo specials only combine when swapped, so the squares between them must be empty of blockers before the swap.
- Swap toward the fuller sideChaining into the half of the board that still holds tiles produces two cascades; chaining into the empty half produces one.
- Stop after one chainA second chain in the same board usually requires the tiles the first chain just removed. Bank the score instead.
- Chain depthHow many specials fire from one swap. Depth two scores roughly four times a single tile in Special Pieces.
- Board debtThe number of unmatchable squares left after a special fires. A high debt means the next two moves are forced.
One deliberate chain per board beats three accidental ones, and it costs fewer moves in Special Pieces.
Six words used when players talk about special tiles
Special-tile play has a vocabulary because the decisions are specific. These six cover the choices that actually change a board.
- Charge
- How close a tile is to becoming special. A three-of-four line has one square left to charge, and that square is worth planning around.
- Detonation square
- The tile a special is fired from. A row-clearer fired from the middle clears two half-rows, which is why placement beats power.
- Overlap
- The squares two specials would clear in common. Chaining two tiles with no overlap wastes one of them in Special Pieces.
- Banking
- Holding a special until the board needs it. Banking one tile is strong; banking three leaves the board without matches.
- Feed
- Arranging tiles so a special forms next to a cluster instead of in a corner. Feeding is what makes a chain reliable.
- Waste clear
- Firing a special to remove three tiles because nothing better exists. Necessary occasionally, never twice in a row.
Count how many specials you fired last board and how many you banked; the ratio predicts your score better than the board layout.
